Derby Circle is 90 years young

President Karol Grabowski writes:

Tonight I went over to the Derby 90th anniversary meeting and celebration. The meeting was attended by a few of the new Presidents – myself and Walter from Province 15 and Pat Horbury from Province 3S who is this year’s President at Barnsley. The atmosphere at the meeting was very good and we had a great dinner afterwards. I had a chance to catch up on what is going on in Barnsley since I was sat next to Pat at dinner.

At the end of the meal, Derby President, Vince Cundy, gave a very enlightening and witty speech about the early days of Derby Circle and quoted from their first book of minutes. It seems they were a Circle full of characters from the very start and have gained a reputation for their competitions with other Circles (for those of you not aware, Derby have held a long-standing draughts competition with Barnsley Circle as one example of this side to them; this explains Pat Horbury’s attendance at the evening).

The reply on behalf of guests was given by our new Provincial President, Tony Record, who reminisced about his great friendship with Austin Jahnsdorf. They had been Presidents together 22 years ago and that group stayed close until Austin’s untimely death a few years ago. Tony recalled that Derby Circle always had characters who were larger than life and who collectively had a competitive edge to them – they like to win, what ever they take part in, be it the draughts matches or the Provincial Soiree which has sadly fallen by the wayside.

My personal thanks must go to Richard and Jenny for taking me over to Derby and to Malcolm for accompanying us. A great evening and one that all of us enjoyed thoroughly.
